ARTICULATED SPACE proposes a layered, permeable, and occupyable threshold between campus and downtown at the corner of Larimer Street and Speer Boulevard in Denver. Breaking the closed building facade along Speer Boulevard, the design allows the circulation of water and people to generate form. Expanded entryways and plazas foster connections between adjacent buildings and allow pedestrians to circulate freely. A terraced wood deck and detention basin manage existing stormwater requirements while also acting as a design feature, allowing people to observe and experience the water in various stages of flow. The birch grove acts as both permeable facade and occupyable space remaining open to multiple groups and uses and changing throughout the seasons. Paving, planting, seating and lighting coordinate transitions throughout the space employing light, color, texture, scent, and seasonal change to enhance the sensory experience of being present in this place.
